Sony VPL-FE100: Quad Projector Lamp Chassis
The Sony VPL-FE100U projector is probably one of the most unique projectors that has ever been produced. The projector is so strange and different because it utilizes four, yes that’s right four, projector lamps. Sony claims that the projector puts out 3200 ANSI lumens because of this fact and also praises the FE100 for being able to run even after one of the lamps has failed. The projector lamp inside the unit is a 120W UHP lamp. The chassis is an interesting shape with the projector lamps stacked two high, side by side in a metal casing that looks like a contraption that belongs at a Michael Jackson concert and not in your projector.
Now, you may expect the projector to be absolutely massive because it does in fact house four projector lamps and you would be right. The projector itself weighs nearly 35 kg’s or almost 75 pounds for you US readers. Rumor has it that the government bought a lot of these projectors in the late 1990’s to fuel screens, charts and radar projections in high-tech places such as NORAD.
Regardless of what it is used for, the Sony FE100U does not mess around. As mentioned earlier, it pumps out 3200 ANSI lumens, which is easily bright enough to outweigh any concerns about too much ambient light coming into the room. The projector also has a sicketating maximum resolution of 1600x1200 pixels, with a native resolution of 1024x768 pixels.
It is also important to keep in mind that this projector was released in 1999 for a retail price of around $15,000. Now, most projectors that we run across here at MyProjectorLamps.com that retail or retailed in that price range are just not worth the asking price. The Sony VPL-FE100, however, is an exception. When it debuted it had specs that six years later are still not being equaled. And considering how fast technology progresses these days, that fact alone is just impressive, plain and simple.
We highly recommend this unit. If you have any friends out there who are looking for projector lamps for their Sony VPL-FE100 or VPL-FX200 please let them know that MyProjectorLamps.com is retailing them for $274.99 for both the LMP-S120 and the LMP-Q120.
Until next time – take it easy.
